I feel so "mommy" today!
Magda now goes to Kindermusik on Saturdays with Stepan. Today, her class will be celebrating Valentine's Day. For the first time ever, I planned appropriate presents for her classmates. We got up this morning, ate breakfest, got dressed, then made play-dough! We both had tons of fun doing it. We did two batches of pink and a batch of green (though one of the pinks was suppose to be blue). Once the play-dough was mixed, we rolled it out and used our heart shaped cookie cutters. Those we put in small "take-n-toss" containers and attached heart-shaped construction cutouts with our V-day message. And VOILA! fun, non-sugary, valentine goodies.
If you are interested in making your own play-dough, we used 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of salt, 3 tablespoons of cooking oil, and 1 cup of boiling water. The color comes from packets of kool-aid (or similar drink mix). Depending on the time of year, you may have to use more or less of the water. Today we needed an extra 1/2 - 3/4 cup. In the summer, when our humidity is higher, we tend to use slightly less (or slightly more flour). It tends to be a bit sticky in the bowl, but will smooth out once you put it on a table and start kneading it by hand.
Also, we used Flavor-Aid. Though their "tropical punch" pouch is a very pretty light blue, it actually comes out the exact same color as their "strawberry".
Store bought play-dough may be easier, but it's not as much fun. The homemade play-dough smells a lot better than what you buy in the store. It's non-toxic but doesn't taste very good. Homemade it probably a bit cheaper as well (though that's really just an assumption - I've never actually done the math).
