Tonight we went to Batfest - a strong tribute to my desire to see Guy Forsyth considering it was sprinkling when we left the house at 5:45pm and actually raining by the time we got downtown. The rain didn't last long and not only did it cool the evening down nicely it also did wonders to wake Magda up from her 10 minute nap in the car.
The festivities included arts and craft sales from local artists (similar to what you would find during Pecan Street Festival, though not nearly as many), face painting, carnival food (corn dogs, pretzels, and lemonade), kiddie rides, music, and of course Mexican free-tail bats (flying from the bridge after dark - not to eat).
Magda had a good time on the kiddie rides. She did the kiddie farris wheel, but she had to ride by herself since there was a 80 pound limit for the car. It looked like she had a death grip on the safety cage and she looked very serious for the entire ride. What she really enjoyed was getting to ride the ponies. She rode them twice and both times chose to ride a horse named Charlie.
Magda got to experience the porta potty for the first time. Of course, her first reaction was "this is gross", but she had to go. I promised that I wouldn't let her fall in. She did her business and we were all set to go. As she gazed in fascination into the toilet, Magda said, "Wait, wait. Let's look at it for a little while."
The evening was topped off with a great 45 minute concert from Guy and Magda's first bag of cotton candy. On the way back to the car, we noticed flood lights installed over the edge of the bridge. We could see hordes of bats swooping in and out of the light. We had a great time and are looking forward to making this an annual event. Maybe next year, more people will be willing to join us.
